MIDNIGHT LIGHT!No matter what anypony said, there were some definite upsides to having parents who were hardly around. One of these fantastic benefits happened to be sneaking away from nanny after nanny in pursuit of adventure!
Well, adventure and friends. Both would work for Midnight Light.
The cream-colored filly galloped at full-tilt into the Main Square of Canterlot, skidding to a halt in front of the quest board. She paused, panting, and looked around with wide golden eyes.
"Phew..." she gasped to herself. "I made it!"
And with that, Midnight Light reared up and rested her front hooves on the quest board, eyes burning through the words at a mile a minute. Gryphons... no, too long. I'll get caught. Same with Bison. What a bother... Ooh! This is perfect!"
As her eyes settled on the Everfree Forest quest, Midnight Light backed away and squeezed her eyes shut, concentrating. As a filly, even the smallest levitation spells were far tougher for her than they would be for an older pony, but as she focused her energy Midnight Light telekinetically peeled the notice off the board and raised it high in the air.
And then, as Midnight focused once more, the notice was illuminated with an otherworldly light. The dangling, shining notice was sure to get some sort of attention! Pleased with herself, Midnight Light paced beneath her handiwork. Sure, it was a spell she had done a hundred times when she was a bit younger, but she no longer practiced her elementary spells with the rigor that she used to.
But this? This was worth it. Anything for the attention... and adventure!
The Quest: The mysterious Everfree Forest is home to all sorts of creepy critters. Please go explore and see if you can document any rare beasts you haven't seen before! But be careful; hardly anything in there is friendly. Minimum Quest Members: 2 Maximum Quest Members: 4 Pays: $200

"i guess I'm not the only one interested in that, huh?"
The blank flank appeared, as if out of thin air, at the side of Midnight light. A casual passer-by might have, if they weren't paying terribly close attention, inferred that they were friends. There was a bluntness to Red Light's tone that belied otherwise, however; somewhere between insensitivity and abject apathy, it gave a distinct impression of being unimpressed.
Not that Red Light was unimpressed, or disinterested; If she wasn't, she wouldn't even be here. Nevertheless, she wasn't a pony to banter around with social niceties, particularly with some pegasi filly she had never met before.
"I've been trying to talk little brother into questing for something like this for ages. We don't really get up and around nearly enough, but maybe with you that'll be enough. to convince him."
Almost pointedly, Red Light stared at the notice as she spoke.

SKYLIGHT;
A small blue pegasus had been following Red Light the entire time, but much slower and sneakier; sticking to the shadows and hiding behind other ponies so that she wouldn't see him. Seeing his friend talking with another filly however, Skylight found himself getting curious. What were they talking about?
Attempting to be bold, the pegasus colt thrust his chest out and attempted to walk straight up to them. A passing earth pony adult in a rush nearly tripped over him, causing Skylight to immediately shrink back down into himself and utter a few apologies. He then darted, sneakily as was his fashion, along the ground until he was at Red Light's side, just in time to hear her mention "convince him".
"Y-you don't need to convince me, big sister." Skylight said, staring cautiously at Midnight Light. "I-I'll go." Despite being male, Skylight's voice was soft and mildly terrified of the situation.

Midnight Light jumped as the red filly seemed to materialize beside her. Her concentration broken, the light around the quest notice faded away and the paper drifted lazily to the ground where the little unicorn caught it in her teeth and tucked it swiftly in her saddlebag.
These were certainly odd young ponies in front of her. They offered no greetings or formalities, which was admittedly a relief. She hadn't even seen them around the palace, and yet Midnight felt that they could be friends. Yes, friends!
"Uh, hello there!" she began, quickly losing her nerve as she tried to put together a coherent introduction. But then Midnight took a deep breath, her golden eyes focused straight ahead, and continued, "I'm Midnight Light the Unicorn, daughter of Sir Moon Daze and Lady Dawn Shine. Pleased to make your acquaintance."
And with that, she dipped her front half down in a ceremonial curtsy, before popping back up. "Well, that's over! I only have a few hours-- well, maybe several, depending on how you view it-- before I have to be back to the palace, but I wanted to get out and go adventuring or something! You coming?"

"um, yeah. why do you think we showed up?"
Apparently, the unicorn was big on social niceties. Fine for her, but she had better not be expecting the same. Dipping her head in the slight inclination of a bow, the Red pony smirked a little as she addressed the unicorn again.
"I'm Red Light. The blue guy's my little brother, Skylight. He's shy, so don't make fun of him. So, what are we going to be doing in the forest? rescuing ponies in distress? finding a lair of secret pony bandits?"
While speaking, Red Light kept her gaze locked firmly on the unicorn filly before her. She couldn't take any chances in the dangerous business of adventuring; this could be a trap, somehow. Perhaps the unicorn was secretly working for someone else, looking for the right opportunity to take down all of Canterlot.
Or maybe she's just looking for companionship, like you. Red Light frowned as her conscience once again reprimanded her. Perhaps you're taking things too seriously. This could be a chance to have pure, honest fun, and nothing more.
Shut up and stop being so optimistic, brain, she thought back.

SKYLIGHT;
The pegasus' ears perked up at the sound of finding an evil bandit's layer. He thought of the treasure and wealth that would bring them. No more sneaking for food! But then Skylight remembered that they were just young; there was no way three little ponies would be able to take down a real enemy.
He looked up at Midnight Light. "How come you only have a few hours?" He asked quietly. He thought it was quite strange that she would give herself a time limit on a quest.
A quest, to Skylight, was only finished when it was finished. It could not be cut short half way, or even a quarter of the way into it. That just made it play time.
Not that he would voice that particular opinion out loud. Unicorns had horns and magic; one of his many irrational fears was pissing off a unicorn and it conjuring a fiery prison around him. Unintentionally, he let out a little squeak at the thought.

Midnight Light glanced pensively at the sky. "Well, the quest sheet just says that we need to explore the Everfree Forest and document at least one feature of notice. So I guess that's what we'll be doing," she said to Red Light, before swinging her head around to the blue pegasus. "Even though my parents have hardly any time to pay attention to me, the palace caretakers are bound to notice I'm gone at some point. So we'd better get going!"
She paused for a moment to magically adjust the straps of her saddlebag, fidgeting this way and that to calm her nerves. "I've never done anything like this before, but I bet it'll be awesome. And in case we get held up, I snuck out some treats from the kitchens." Midnight puffed up her chest proudly, her blue tail swishing. "You guys ready?"

Red light was gone. For a second or two, there was only a vaguely pony-shaped space where she used to be; it was as if she had never been there.
"I had to get my stuff."
Red trotted back towards the group, a set of black-and-grey saddlebags slung over her back as proof of her words. These pouches bulged at odd angles, as if crammed with knickknacks and other miscellaneous items. No explanation was offered as to where she had retrieved the satchel from, and no questions were expected.
"So, I'm just about ready to go, if you are. What kind of treats did you bring?" Red asked suddenly, almost immediately afterwards noticing an uncomfortable flushing in her cheeks. It was true that she had to be strong, and independent, and not beholden to anyone...the last bit was the most important...
...but she only rarely got sweets, it seemed. Perhaps the girl would be willing to trade some of the contents of her saddlebags for some of mine, Red thought to herself. Yes, it would have to be that way; it would be the fairest possible exchange, and then they wouldn't be indebted to each other.

SKYLIGHT;
Skylight shifted uncomfortably. He felt a little weird; the two girls had bags to carry, and carrying things was awkward for him because of his wings. Somewhere in the back of his head, the young stallion-to-be felt that he should be carrying them.
"I..." He started to say something, then put his head down. "I'm ready to go when you are." The young pegasus looked around the main square nervously. None of these other ponies even noticed them. If something happened to them, Midnight Light had parents and royal palace ponies that would notice.
No one would notice if anything happened to him or Red Light. He was worried that if something did happen, he wouldn't be brave enough to save them.

Midnight Light glanced up at the sky. The weather was promising; that was certainly good at least. By the time she turned her head back to Red Light, a saddlebag had mysteriously appeared. "I'm as ready as I could possibly be. We've got miniature cakes and portable pastries and all sorts of wonderful goodies, too."
She was about to trot off when she heard Skylight softly speak. Midnight gave both blank flanks what she considered to be her most reassuring nod, and began to trot slowly out of the Main Square.
